What's the best leadership advice you've received?

What’s the best career advice you’ve received from a leader in your life? Blog Image

We all come across bits of wisdom that really stick with us—words of advice that help us grow both personally and professionally. Whether it’s learning to be more patient, the power of listening, or embracing personal growth, these lessons shape how we work and lead.

Five NVA Hospital Managers from clinics across Minnesota share the advice that’s made a real impact on their careers.

People don’t just want to be heard—they want to feel truly seen and valued. 💖

“As a leader, I’ve learned that creating a strong culture isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about listening, understanding, and making sure every team member knows they matter. When people feel respected, supported, and encouraged to develop, they bring their best selves to work—leading to a happier, more engaged, and more productive team.”

- Jay Browne, Hospital Manager at NVA’s Southview Animal Hospital in West St. Paul, MN

Think before you respond. 💬

“I had a great mentor named Molly Steffan who shared this advice with me as a new upcoming leader in the healthcare industry... I was quick to respond but did not understand the impact of slowing down and thinking about the outcome you want out of the communication. This allows me to drive the culture that we need to foster our teams' daily goals.”

- Jen Dean, Hospital Manager at NVA's Flying Cloud Animal Hospital in Eden Prairie, MN

How did you contribute to the situation and what could you have done differently that may have changed the outcome? 🤔

“This is courtesy of Jen Dean, Hospital Manager at Flying Cloud Animal Hospital. I love this piece of advice because it can be applied to any situation at any level of an organization. As we learn and grow every day as teams and individuals, I have found that this is a sound piece of advice that has stuck with me throughout.”

- Tiffany Lewis, Hospital Manager at NVA's Stillwater Veterinary Clinic in Stillwater, MN

Assume good intent with others. 🤝

“When work inevitably gets challenging or frustrating, I remind myself that no one is intentionally making mistakes or making things difficult, and this allows me to look at the problem with more patience and curiosity. This fostered healthy problem-solving and trust, reduced misunderstandings, and improved collaboration.”

- Chris Sellner, Hospital Manager at NVA’s North Branch Veterinary Clinic in North Branch, MN

When evaluating yourself, never compare yourself to others. 🚫

“Early in my career, Dr. Mike Harbin taught me that growth, improvement and development, both personally and professionally, can only be measured against you and you alone. When you start to compare yourself to others, you fail to see the opportunities for self-improvement and growth. No matter how great you are at your job, there is always room for improvement... That advice has stuck with me through the years as I have grown in my career from technician, to lead technician, to practice manager.”

- Billy Damon, Hospital Manager at NVA’s Nicollet Veterinary Clinic in Nicollet, MN and All Pets Medicine, Surgery, and Rehabilitation Clinic in Mapleton, MN
