Alta Animal Hospital saved this abandoned Great Dane—then made her family

Dr. Taylor Ellis helped Twiggy go from fighting for survival to living her best life.

An abandoned and frail Great Dane was found on the roadside in Pocatello, Idaho, and a local shelter rushed her to Alta Animal Hospital. She was severely malnourished and desperately needed love and medical care.

Weighing a shocking 37 pounds when she first arrived—barely a third of what a healthy Great Dane should weigh—the team knew they needed to act immediately.

But just two weeks into recovery, the team discovered a devastating setback: a chronic foreign body was obstructing her GI tract. She needed emergency, life-saving surgery.

And after 30 days of care, Dr. Taylor Ellis made a life-changing decision: she adopted her and named her Twiggy—after the iconic 1960s model.

"I immediately saw something special in her,” said Dr. Ellis. "Without question, I knew we were meant to be family."

“Anyone who knows Twiggy knows how special of a dog she is,” said Lindsay Davis, Hospital Manager at Alta Animal Hospital. “She's a warrior.”

The surgery was a success and by month four, Twiggy had transformed into the healthy, joyful dog she was always meant to be.

Today, Twiggy spends her days running trails, napping on the couch, and sharing her adventures with her followers on Instagram at @twiggy_the_great_.

"Twiggy is more than just a pet, she has become my soul dog, a testament to the extraordinary bond between humans and animals," said Dr. Ellis. "Her journey from the brink of starvation to a life filled with joy is a constant reminder of the power of resilience, love, and second chances."
