Arrow survived a house fire — and found a family at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital

After escaping a house fire with severe burns, Arrow has spent nearly two months in the care of a team that gave him more than just a second chance at life.

When a house fire tore through a New Jersey home, a young dog named Arrow barely made it out alive. He was found running around the property, terrified and badly injured.

Authorities brought Arrow to Associated Humane Societies (AHS), but the true extent of his burns wouldn't be known for days, as burned skin can take five to seven days to begin falling off. Once the severity became clear, AHS reached out to Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital (OVH).

"I was honored that in their moment of need, AHS thought to reach out to us," said Amanda Rossman, Veterinary Technician. "That trust, plus the love each team member has shown for these shelter pets, really pushes us to go the extra step."

Despite the severity of his wounds, Arrow was gentle and impossibly sweet. His treatment included flushing and debriding the wound, applying silver sulfadiazine cream, and wrapping him from his shoulders to his hind legs in protective bandaging.

"His case brought the hospital to another level of unity," said Dr. Annemarie Alberta. "It grew our passion for veterinary medicine as a group to see his successful healing move forward."

More than 50 days later, Arrow's wounds are about 70% healed, new skin has grown back, and every day he makes a lap around the hospital to say hello to each department. His forever home is out there waiting, and OVH and AHS plan to find him the perfect match.
