NVA General Practice

How my NVA externships inspired me to start my career here in this community

Male extern veterinarian holding a black dog

This spring, I’ll earn my DVM from the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. As graduation approaches, I find myself reflecting on the individuals and experiences that prepared me to succeed as a practicing veterinarian. The doctors and teams I encountered through NVA’s General Practice Externship Program played a significant role in that.

As an extern at NVA’s Frisco Animal Hospital and I-20 Animal Hospital, I broadened my medical knowledge, honed my practical skills, and gained an invaluable network that will follow me through my career.

Nestled in the Colorado mountains, Frisco Animal Hospital hosts a diverse clientele. This meant every day was exciting.

Working alongside Dr. Tracy Keppel-Kolb, I gained valuable hands-on experience assisting with spay/neuter procedures and dental treatments.

As a team, Frisco takes nutrition very seriously. Seeing a practice emphasize this critical aspect of pet health was great! Their focus enhanced my knowledge in this area.

I also witnessed first-hand how they care for avalanche search-and-rescue dogs – who Frisco treats year-round with check-ups, nutrition plans, and general care. (Plus, I managed to squeeze in some skiing during my lunch breaks!)

Dr. Sallye Gregg IN SNOW

At I-20 Animal Hospital, outside of Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Sallye Gregg created a welcoming environment. I felt a part of the team on day one. With doctor oversight, I worked up my own cases, pursued treatment plans, and even “scrubbed in” to surgeries by assisting with standard ER procedures such as foreign body removals and pyometras.

I also discussed potential diagnostic and treatment strategies with clients, which helped refine my communication skills.

I loved I-20 for many reasons, but the main ones were the incredible support staff and doctors who provided outstanding mentorship.

I-20 ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Through my externship experiences, I got to know the NVA community. I love how each practice has medical autonomy; each clinic’s culture is unique. That’s why, this spring, I’m excited to start my career here and treat patients alongside the tight-knit team at Starch Pet Hospital in Des Moines!
