Meet Dr. Shannon Carmichael: Champion for mentorship and diversity in vet med
June 20, 2025 · COMMUNITY

Dr. Shannon Carmichael, CVA, CCRT, is the Managing DVM at Sea Island Animal Hospital in South Carolina, where she combines her expertise in traditional veterinary medicine with certifications in veterinary acupuncture (CVA) and canine rehabilitation therapy (CCRT).
Dr. Carmichael has mentored over 20 veterinary students through NVA's externship program. As an advocate for diversity in veterinary medicine, she actively supports organizations like the National Association for Black Veterinarians.

We asked Dr. Carmichael 12 rapid-fire questions about what keeps her motivated both in and out of the clinic.
Inspiring the next generation 🌟 or learning from them 💡?
I love learning from students and new graduates. The veterinary field is always changing, and it's great to have fresh ideas and learn how to better help patients.
Eastern medicine 🌿 or Western medicine 💊?
I love Eastern medicine; it allows us to think outside of the box and combine traditional therapies to complement Western medicine and improve pets' quality of life.
Summer ☀️ or winter ❄️?
Since I live in South Carolina and summer brings humidity and an unnatural heat index, I'd have to say winter.
Rehabilitation 🏃♀️ or acupuncture 🌿?
That's a tough choice since I'm certified in both and often incorporate both simultaneously into my treatment plans.
Sunrise 🌅 or sunset 🌇?
I prefer sunsets—it's a great time to reflect on the day.

Emergency medicine 🚨 or general practice 🐕?
I love GP as it allows me to do a little bit of everything, but I do like the occasional ER appointment to keep things interesting! 😊
Pizza 🍕 or tacos 🌮?
Hawaiian pizza is good comfort food, especially after a long workday.
Geriatric care 👴🐕 or puppy/kitten visits 🐱?
Who doesn't love a puppy visit? However, I have a special place in my heart for geriatric care and helping pets and their parents through the aging process.
Small animal 🐕 or equine medicine 🐴?
I love my horse Drifter, and horseback riding is one of my favorite hobbies. However, this horse girl is a small animal vet only.
Sweet 🍪 or savory snacks 🥨?
Definitely chocolate—no meal is complete without it.
Instructing new DVMs from the sidelines 📋 or collaborating hands-on in surgery 🔧?
I love to be hands-on to help build new DVMs' skills and confidence level.

Walk 🚶♀️ or run 🏃♀️?
Unless I'm being chased, I prefer walking.
