Metairie Small Animal Hospital partners with rescue to save thousands of animals in Louisiana

The partnership between Metairie Small Animal Hospital and Zeus' Rescues proves that collaboration can transform—and save—countless lives.

Metairie Small Animal Hospital (MSAH) has been the trusted veterinary partner for Zeus' Rescues for eight years, together saving thousands of dogs and cats from kill shelters in Louisiana.

"It’s been amazing working side by side with them to help animals that weren't given a chance," said Dr. Joe Vaccaro, Managing Veterinarian at MSAH.

Their latest success story: an abandoned poodle puppy who could barely lift his head, let alone stand, when he first arrived at MSAH.

When the puppy first arrived at MSAH

“He was emaciated, frail, completely matted, covered with urine, and absolutely terrified,” said Dr. Adi Chatow. “Unfortunately, it seemed like he was a victim of a severe neglect case even though he was still a young puppy.”

After a complete shave and bath, the puppy—named Champ—weighed only 11.4 pounds instead of a healthy 35 pounds.

“He wouldn't have survived another day without help," said the Zeus’ Rescues team.

The MSAH team stabilized Champ, gave him vaccinations and parasite prevention, and placed him on a strict feeding plan to help him gain weight safely.

Within just a few days, Champ's personality started to shine through. When he came back for his neuter procedure a few months later, he was unrecognizable.

“He was a full-grown, cheery doodle who was no longer terrified of life,” said Dr. Chatow. "Working with Zeus’ Rescues is incredibly rewarding and a constant reminder of why we do what we do.
