Neglected and fighting to survive: How Metairie Small Animal Hospital saved eight puppies’ lives

The team provided warm shelter, medical care, and love to pups rescued from a heartbreaking situation in Mississippi.

Earlier this year, more than 200 severely neglected dogs were rescued from a rural property in Tupelo, Mississippi. The animals had been living in heartbreaking conditions for years: exposed to freezing temperatures, hunger and neglect. Many had broken teeth, scars from untreated wounds, parasites and worms.

When a freeze threatened the already vulnerable animals, Metairie Small Animal Hospital (MSAH) joined forces with local rescue organization Northshore Humane Society, taking in eight of the puppies.

"Whether Northshore needs emergency fosters during a weather crisis or help with medical cases, we're always ready to assist,” said Lauren Murray, Operations Manager. “We show up for them, and they show up for the animals. It's teamwork at its best."

For three weeks, the MSAH team treated the puppies' severe respiratory infections while nurturing them through socialization and human connection.

"We don't just provide medical care, we give these animals affection, playtime, and moments of joy," said Erin Dore, Veterinary Assistant. "Being part of their healing process is something I'm genuinely grateful for."

Last month, all eight puppies returned to Northshore Humane Society, healthy and ready for their forever homes.

For Jenna Huggett, Veterinary Assistant, moments like these aren't extraordinary; they're simply an extension of who they are at MSAH. “Helping an animal come back from such a vulnerable place is incredibly rewarding. Seeing that transformation, seeing them brighten, heal, and trust again is something our entire team shares pride in.”
