Valley Cottage Animal Hospital saves abandoned, gunshot-wounded dog and her puppies

In early February, Annabelle, a sweet and courageous dog, was found abandoned in a Texas field with a gunshot wound in her leg. Beside her were seven puppies, nestled closely for warmth.
Thanks to the workers who discovered her and the power of social media, her story reached a rescue in New York State. Through a network of volunteers, the dogs traveled to Valley Cottage Animal Hospital, where we welcomed and sheltered the family for several days.
While the puppies seemed mostly in good health, Annabelle’s injury was quite severe. Prior to her arrival, she had been given a splint, which caused swelling and a secondary wound.

We gave her a thorough examination, X-ray, and treated her infected wounds with medication.
The team then worked with an orthopedic specialist who determined her injury was too severe to repair. She will require surgery to have the leg removed. While her recovery will be challenging, Annabelle remains brave, sweet, and calm through it all.

Annabelle’s foster mom tells us that despite everything they’ve been through, she still gets excited and wants to chase squirrels in the yard. That spirit is what makes our work so rewarding.
Once Annabelle recovers from her surgery, her rescue group says she will be comforting veterans who have also lost limbs.
