Dr. Frank Shuman IV
Dr. Shuman serves as Medical Director at three NVA hospitals in Austin, Texas: South Park Animal Hospital, Southwest Veterinary Hospital, and Dripping Springs Animal Hospital.
Originally from Orange, a small town on the Louisiana-Texas border, Dr. Shuman gained his first veterinary experience at a local mixed animal practice. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 and completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010.
After graduation, Dr. Shuman joined the Houston SPCA, where he quickly ascended to Medical Director. This role provided diverse experience treating companion animals, farm animals, wildlife, and occasionally large exotic cats. The shelter's high caseload allowed him to develop advanced proficiency in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery while managing critical cases. His work treating severely neglected and abused animals was even featured on Animal Planet's "Animal Cops: Houston."
In 2013, Dr. Shuman became an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University, where he initiated and managed the Shelter Medicine and Animal Welfare rotation for fourth-year veterinary students. The program has exposed over 1,500 students to the challenges of shelter medicine and provided a caseload and space for advanced and hands-on learning.
Dr. Shuman took over Dripping Springs Animal Hospital in 2016, becoming Medical Director after Dr. Hudson's retirement. In 2021, he expanded his role to include Medical Director at South Park Animal Hospital and Southwest Veterinary Hospital.
Dr. Shuman's special interests include soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, wound management, and exotic animal medicine.
His goal in joining the Medical Advisory Board is to connect with like-minded colleagues who bring diverse experiences together to advance veterinary care and improve hospital efficiency.
Dr. Shuman lives in Southwest Austin with his wife Natalie, their three children: Hailey (20), Zan (10), and Luca (7), plus their two dogs, Jack (16) and Tucker (13). Outside of veterinary medicine, he enjoys soccer, traveling, and spending quality time with his family. He's also actively involved in his community, coaching youth baseball and soccer leagues.
